India - Children's Initiative
In the commercial fishing area where we work to eradicate poverty, there are 320 fatherless [semi orphan] children & 60 orphans staying in homes with foster parents. They are receiving lowest level education and some no education at all. There are 35 children who receive no education at all due to family problems & financial difficulty causing extreme poverty. We must break the poverty cycle through education of the children.
In the State of Andhra Pradesh the literacy rate is only 67% in a population of 49 million. Children in this society without sufficient education end up working by 12 years of age on boats, in gravel pits, are trafficked, or forced to work under inhuman conditions where their miseries know no end. Simply stated, they are exploited, despite child labor laws.
Total Cost for two years for educating these children is approximately $22,000 USD. Approximately, $8000 of this is for the purchase and shipping of 35 Chrome laptops to India (which is a one-time cost). The remainder is approximately $7000 per year for teachers, snacks, internet, and small supplies. Imagine being able to educate a child for only $200/year.
What can you do today to help these precious children?
